When the late Jimmy Miller was on the top of the world with the Rolling Stones, he was given a ten-album deal with ABC Records resulting in various releases, including a B.B. King album produced by the late Joe Zagarino, material by Bobby Whitlock, and this extraordinary record by the lead singer of Ten Wheel Drive, Genya Ravan. Jim Price and Joe Zagarino produced the album for Jimmy Miller Productions, with Miller producing only two of the 12 titles, the Stones-ish "Southern Celebration" and Eric Clapton/Bobby Whitlock's "Keep on Growing." This is a great setting for Ravan, her impeccable vocals a perfect fit for an album rife with pop and Southern rock. Jimmy Miller produced Delaney & Bonnie & Friends on Tour With Eric Clapton (and George Harrison incognito), and the legendary status garnered by that classic and the Blind Faith album should've insured this disc a better fate. http://www.allmusic.com/album/they-love-me-they-love-me-not-r47614/review

Letters to Jackie Kennedy

Newton Author/Historian Ellen Fitzpatrick on Visual Radio along with writer/editor Rachel Kramer Bussel; film review Rocketship X-M with guest film historian Frank Dello Stritto

This week on Visual Radio we have Newton historian and author, Ellen Fitzpatrick, chatting via phone about her new book LETTERS TO JACKIE. This 10th Anniversary of 9/11 casts a shadow over that deep, dark moment in American history, the November 22, 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy, forty-eight years ago.

As the publicist notes: "Within seven weeks of the President's death, Jacqueline Kennedy received more than 800,000 condolence letters. Two years later, the volume of correspondence would exceed 1.5 million letters. For the next forty-six years, the letters would remain essentially untouched."

Ellen Fitzpatrick has selected approximately 250 of these letters for inclusion in Letters to Jackie, She will talk to us live, via phone, about how she selected each letter and her perspective on how this book fits into American history and literature.

Rachel Kramer Bussel, erotica writer and editor, has just put out the book
"Obsessed: Erotic Romance for Women". In November, her book "Women in Lust: Erotic Stories" will be out as well. She will also be phoning in to Visual Radio, as will author of Vampire Over London, Bela Lugosi biographer Frank Dello Stritto to talk about the vintage film Rocketship X-M, which airs on http://www.wincam.org on Friday night at 9 PM

Visual Radio Live airs at 8 Pm on http://www.wincam.org

Upcoming guests: Bobby Whitlock of Derek & The Dominoes discussing the re-release of the album LAYLA on September 22; Anthony DeCurtis from Rolling Stone magazine doing a studio taping (via phone) on September 21 regarding the new book he edited BLUES & CHAOS: THE MUSIC WRITING OF ROBERT PALMER, Nat Simpkins talks about Bobby Hebb on September 29

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jonathan Eller
Biographer of
Ray Bradbury

Jonathan R. Eller
BECOMING
RAY BRADBURY

Thursday Sept. 1
8 PM on
Visual Radio

University of Illinois Press has released Becoming Ray Bradbury, a fascinating

look deep inside the man behind Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man,

Something Wicked This Way Comes, Dandelion Wine and more

http://www.raybradbury.com/books/books.html

Bradbury on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Bradbury

The authoritative biography of Ray Bradbury's early years

http://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/catalog/76sxh7pr9780252036293.html

Becoming Ray Bradbury chronicles the making of an iconic American writer by exploring Ray Bradbury's childhood and early years of his long life in fiction, film, television, radio, and theater. Jonathan R. Eller measures the impact of the authors, artists, illustrators, and filmmakers who stimulated Bradbury's imagination throughout his first three decades. Unprecedented access to Bradbury's personal papers and other private collections provides insight into his emerging talent through his unpublished correspondence, his rare but often insightful notes on writing, and his interactions with those who mentored him during those early years.

Beginning with his childhood in Waukegan, Illinois, and Los Angeles, this biography follows Bradbury's development from avid reader to maturing author, making a living writing for pulp magazines. Eller illuminates the sources of Bradbury's growing interest in the human mind, the human condition, and the ambiguities of life and death--themes that became increasingly apparent in his early fiction. Bradbury's correspondence documents his frustrating encounters with the major trade publishing houses and his earliest unpublished reflections on the nature of authorship. Eller traces the sources of Bradbury's very conscious decisions, following the sudden success of The Martian Chronicles andThe Illustrated Man, to voice controversial political statements in his fiction, and he highlights the private motivations behind the burst of creative energy that transformed his novella "The Fireman" into the classic novel Fahrenheit 451.

Becoming Ray Bradbury reveals Bradbury's emotional world as it matured through his explorations of cinema and art, his interactions with agents and editors, his reading discoveries, and the invaluable reading suggestions of older writers. These largely unexplored elements of his life pave the way to a deeper understanding of his more public achievements, providing a biography of the mind, the story of Bradbury's self-education and the emerging sense of authorship at the heart of his boundless creativity.

JERRY ROSS
September 8, 2011 8 pm
Visual Radio host Joe Viglione talks to producer Jerry Ross, the man who recorded Ashford & Simpson along with Melba Moore on Bobby Hebb's immortal "Sunny" as well as the entire "Sunny" album. 8 PM on WinCAM.org Channel 8 on Comcast, Channel 36 on Verizon.

Mr. Ross produced Spanky & Our Gang, Keith (98.6), Jay & The Techniques and so many more. He also co-wrote "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" with Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff (Gamble & Huff of Philly International) which hit for The Temptations & The Supremes, Dee Dee Warwick and Madeline Bell

Tonight Ross and Viglione will discuss the passing of the great Nicholas Ashford.

Hit radio received a jolt, a shockwave, with the tragic passing of Nicholas Ashford on Monday, August 22. It is a significant loss of one of the creators of some of the finest pop records ever to grace an AM radio speaker. With his wife, Valerie Simpson, he crafted such memorable tunes as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" for Diana Ross, "You're All I Need to Get By" from Marvin Gaye & Tami Terrell, "Let's Go Get Stoned" - a huge hit for Ray Charles but a signature tune as well for Joe Cocker - who performed it at Woodstock, Ashford & Simpson's own big Top 12 hit (#1 R & B) "Solid" and so many others. Ashford & Simpson produced and wrote and sang backing vocals on "Remember Me", a superb Diana Ross hit that doesn't get nearly enough airplay as an oldie.

Humble Pie took "I Don't Need No Doctor" from a Nick Ashford solo 45 PM on Verve Records and made it the centerpiece of their live lp HJMBLE PIE PERFORMANCE ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE in 1973 and was a huge FM smash.

R.I.P. Nick Ashford 8/22/11 R.I.P. Bobby Hebb 8/3/10

Two of the great voices behind the hit "Sunny". We'll talk about it from the man who made that immortal recording with these giants, the fantastic Jerry Ross.

From the NY Times
"Mr. Ashford died of throat cancer on Monday at a hospital in New York at the age of 70, leaving behind his wife and writing partner and a catalog of hit songs that expressed the couple’s expansive and hopeful view of love, his biggest hits being “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.”

John Till and Janis Joplin performed at WOODSTOCK on August 17th.

We are celebrating the 42nd Anniversary the night after on Visual Radio!

Visual Radio host Joe Viglione interviewed Mr. Till for a biography published on AllMusic.com / Rovi

The music was underrated at the time, but now provides a treasure chest of insight into how Joplin was perfecting her craft -- and how John Till was growing artistically as well. Full sets from Port Chester, NY, in early August, the first Woodstock fest in mid-August of 1969, and the Texas International Pop Festival from Labor Day weekend of the same year, along with material from the Boston Music Hall that December, exist and show the power of the band. When Joplin formed her Full Tilt Boogie Band it was the creation of a perfect unit with which she could express herself. The Pearl album and the tour that preceded it has the dependable John Till sound embellishing her music in a natural progression from the experimental sounds Sam Andrew provided. - Joe Viglione for AllMusic.com

John generously allowed our audience to hear some history by allowing me to print info from this e mail:

Wed, 17 Aug 2011 12:09 John Till wrote:

Joe

I've been to Boston a few times, and always had a
good time there.

The final live concert that Janis ever played was at Harvard Stadium, Aug.12/70.

Of course none of us in the band ever imagined that it would be the last time,
but we had a great time while we were there!

The Stadium was jammed packed and noisy that afternoon.

The band's dressing room was a small house trailer along one side of the of the field right by the seating area. So close we could shake hands with the people when we opened the trailer door. There were several cases of beer on ice in the trailer that we couldn't ever have
finished so we handed dozens of bottles out the door to the people.

There were a lot of thumbs up each time we did that.

It was a hot day.

___________________________

Thanks, John, for sharing the memories. John has a disc of 8 songs from the Harvard Square show where the band played Mercedez Benz behind Janis! Not something you hear as the hit version of the song was a capella

We may talk about Janis' press secretary, Myra Friedman, who passed away last October

John spoke with Myra on the phone constantly and saw her again in 2009 at her apartment on 14th Street.

Rachel Maddow Talks To Former Right-to-Lifer, Frank Scheaffer About Tiller Murder

Frank Sheaffer, author of Crazy for God who with his father was one of the early founders of the radical right wing anti-abortion movement in the 1970's takes back the angry words that he claims plant the seeds that lead extremists to kill. Sheaffer insists that anyone uttering violent rhetoric must take responsibility for the outcome.
